Summer Months
Busiest Time Of The Year For Contractors
The spring, summer, and early fall months are the busiest time of the year for contractors, especially those that do most of their work outside. Even the interior contractors tend to be busier during this time, should a homeowner decide to do an upgrade, and the contractor needs a place to store the items being removed from the home until they can be discarded. This would be a bit difficult if there is snow on the ground.
You want to make sure you have the proper general liability coverage in place prior to starting the job. Just because a homeowner, or business, does not ask for proof of coverage, does not mean you do not need it. In the course of your work, you could accidentally damage something in the home or business, which could be costly to repair or replace. Who would responsible for repairing or replacing the damaged item? The homeowner and/or business owner would expect YOU to repair or replace the item. If this is an item, technology, part of the home, damages can run anywhere from a couple hundred, to several thousands of dollars. Is your business so big, that you can afford $100,000 or more out of your pocket to replace these items? Probably not.
A general liability policy would protect you against damages in the course of your work (ie: Scratched floor, roof leak, hole in the wall, electronics damages or destroyed, etc)
If you have equipment used for your business, whether you are renting equipment, or own equipment, most carriers offer an equipment floater to their policies, which will extend coverage to this equipment. This would be like a backhoe or excavator.
· Do you have equipment coverage now?
· Do you even know if there is equipment coverage on your current policy?
· When was the last time your policy was reviewed for gaps in coverage?
As an independent insurance agency, we represent several carriers. Some are for the smaller contractor, that may only need some minor tools and equipment coverage with the general liability, and other carriers are for larger contractors that may be doing snow plowing during the winter, and may need larger equipment coverage like the backhoe or excavator.
